Willem Stassen

Willem Stassen is Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine and Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre on Integrated Clinical Care at the University of Cape Town. He trained as a degreed paramedic in South Africa and holds a Master's in Emergency Medicine, a postgraduate diploma in Applied Ethics, and a joint PhD from Karolinska Institutet and Stellenbosch University. He is now among Africa’s most published and cited out-of-hospital emergency care researchers. His work strengthens emergency care systems from the ambulance dispatch call through to critical care retrieval, drawing on multiple research methods that are responsive to the questions being asked. As the coordinator of UCT's PhD programme in Emergency Medicine, he treats research capacity-building as part of systems strengthening rather than an adjunct to it. Both are done with the communities and practitioners the system exists to serve, not on their behalf.
